about

About The New Record....

Greg Hester is perhaps the best kept secret of the South. His career spans two decades as he moved steadily from a young country rocker to a seasoned soul man and songwriter. In 2009 Greg dropped the perennially funky ‘Hustlers, Killers, and Thieves’, featuring members of the James Brown band, to excellent reviews. 2012 will mark the release of Greg’s long term project, ‘Soul Brother Where Art Thou’, a tribute to James Brown with a variety of very special guests.

In the midst of this whirlwind of creativity, Greg has been writing and recording HIS songs. Songs that in retrospect chronicle his life in the new millennium. Recorded over the last decade at Eric McConnell's east Nashville studio, the songs tell of the highs and lows. From the loss of his mother, father, and sister to the birth of his son. From the loss of his home to support of established musicians who always seem to be by his side. Musicians who know that Greg Hester lives for music, and that music lives for him.

The lyrics, well, they speak of life and love of course. It is no surprise that Greg was a finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition, as Greg lays open his heart when he writes. Laced with sadness and sometimes drunken desperation, the music struggles with and ultimately finds a positive space. Added to 7 tracks from Greg are three covers selected for their depth and personal connection to the artist. Jimmy Hall’s (Wet Willie) classic ‘Keep On Smilin’ appears as the anthem of determination from one of Greg’s heroes. I’ll Find My Way Home from Chris Unck (Butch Walker) is a longing power ballad. ‘Here By The Grace Of God Go I’ by Mike Brown ends the record, as Greg closes out his American Story with a reflective and peaceful statement of simplicity.

In today’s world of a song a second, it is easy to overlook an artist. We at Ropeadope have the good fortune to have taken our time and listened many times to these songs, and to know the story. We hope that you will have the same opportunity to get to know Greg Hester.
